Squishies created by a wellbeing workshop group
In the last year, we’ve been very happy to have received specific funding for running our community workshops. But what are our workshops all about, and why do we do them?
Serving everyone
When The Juno Project started, we largely worked in schools. This was the natural place for us, as we were often supporting young women who were, for various reasons, finding school difficult.
But we also realised that it was equally important to create that space in the community. And it allowed us to do things a little differently.
Friendship bracelets created during our craft and chat wellbeing workshop
We call our wellbeing workshops in the community “craft and chat”. Our very experienced facilitators introduce different topics at each session, alongside an element of craft.
This is simple craft; no one needs to be an expert or even have done it before! We can deep dive into important topics, but we also make bath bombs, friendship bracelets, squishies, and affirmation books.
The craft element of our group is very popular. It’s a tangible outcome from the group, but something that creates a fun and relaxing space in which to chat. As we craft we explore:
Self-awareness: what is it, and how do we develop it?
Identity and gifts - everyone has something they are good at
Simple ways to handle stress & big emotions
How to build confidence
How to handle tricky relationships
The amazing young brain!
Self-esteem and self-care
Communication, core values, and goal setting
These topics form the bedrock of how a young person thrives. Knowing what makes a healthy relationship, how a teenage brain works, and how to handle big feelings are some of the topics that can have a long-lasting impact.
Young people are often nervous to come; they are worried they won’t know anyone and that they may not make friends. Overwhelmingly, though, they do, and are glad they came.
These are some of the comments we receive from the participants:
“My fave part is that I made new friends”
“I found today really helpful because we discussed worries!!! I also enjoyed squishy making”
“We have talked about worries, and that made me feel comfortable. My fave bit was making the bath bombs”
And from parents
“S really enjoyed these sessions and has felt that they have helped hugely to understand her emotions and feelings, but also realising she’s not alone in having these feelings.”
“Z was able to meet children who have gone through the same thing and she learnt some new skills in how to dye clothes”
